My consulting work is based on decades of experience in legal and financial roles. I have been an attorney, the founder of a business, an investment advisor, a financial planner, an employee benefits consultant, a trust officer, and an insurance professional.
During the past three decades, I experienced succession of ownership first-hand in three small businesses, the first as a key executive in a family-owned business, and the next two as partner in the businesses. Internal succession was not achieved in the first two, but successful external sales of the businesses resulted. The third and most recent business was one I founded in 2005, and from the beginning I wanted it to survive beyond me. Late in 2017, I triggered the internal sale of my interest in this third company, as provided in its governing documents, to be completed over transition period during which my interest was reduced in annual increments. The internal sale was completed in early 2021, and this business continues without me, as I had planned.
Over the course of my career, I picked up a variety of related knowledge and experience, such as financial and estate planning, trust and estate administration, employee benefit administration, document preparation, and family education. I also honed my personal code of values as a husband, father, and grandfather, something that is beyond the scope of discussion here but that affects my approach to succession issues in businesses and families.
Although I think my C.V. is of limited value at this point in my career, it does provide a few mile markers along the road I’ve travelled across the decades.
